The adidas Originals ZX Flux Aurora Borealis Is Ready For Toronto

ADIDAS 1 ADIDAS 2 ADIDAS 3

The adidas Originals ZX Flux is the latest sneaker to rock an Aurora Borealis theme. For those who aren’t in the know, Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is a natural light display in the sky that is usually seen in the high latitude that becomes more and more visible in the sky the further you go north. Being that this year’s NBA All Star game will be held in the “north” a lot of shoes are taking advantage of the theme.

The ZX Flux will come with a printed upper done in a purple base accented by the hits of  purple, orange and pink sky accents made to symbolize the Northern Lights. A white sole unit, a set of black laces completes the major features of the shoe. Available now, let us know if you plan on picking up a pair.

Author’s Take

The theme is represented very nicely on the shoe. Good choice on not placing the Three Stripes branding on the side panels, you’re able to appreciate the print of the shoe much more.

The latest adidas silhouette that Raf Simons was able to get his hands on is none other than the adidas Originals Stan Smith. In Raf Simons fashion, the silhouette takes on a whole new look.

The fashion designer puts his attitude and persona on to the Stan Smith by caging the shoe in three strips made out of velcro straps with a buckle attached to them. The shoe itself comes in an all-black leather motif, while the added strips come in a contrasting white colorway. Additional white can be seen on the branding on the tongue and heel tab of the shoe. What are your thoughts on this new look on the Stan Smith? Available now, pick up your very own pair for $325.

Author’s Take

Obviously, the straps are also meant to symbolize the Three Stripes branding of the shoe, which I have to admit is pretty creative. But is it worth $325 though? Personally, I don’t think so.

The NBA All-Star game may still be two weeks away but we already have images of the footwear that James Harden is going to wear on the court that day. Let’s take a look at the adidas Crazylight Boost 2.5 James Harden PE.

This special version of the adidas Crazylight Boost 2.5 is said to be a PE “Aurora Borealis” version of the model. Coming in a Dark Purple/Shock Pink-Black colorway, the first thing that caught out attention was the the shoe will come with Harden’s personal “H13″ logo placed on the tongue of the shoe. What gives the shoe even more of a “PE” feel is the fact that it comes with the adidas reflective Xeno tech placed on the heelm, quarters and tongue of the shoe. Set to drop February 11th for $125, are you looking to pick up the bears to show your support to the Beard?

Author’s Take

The technology on the shoe (Boost and Xeno) is dope, I’m just not really feeling the colors they chose on the shoe. I understand it’s an “Aurora Borealis” theme, but I feel like adidas could have done a better job with the colorway.

adidas Gifted a Rollerskate Version of the D Lillard 2 to Damian Lillard

With the recent launch of the adidas D Lillard 2 in the Portland Blazers' red and black colors, adidas has created a somewhat quirky customization of the signature basketball sneaker that it then gifted to Lillard. Portland-based Recon Northwest was enlisted to create a "Dame 2 Skate" roller skate version out of the sneaker, in the process blacking out the sole and adorning it with powder-coated bolts and cushion pads. Lillard, who is known to pop down to the local skate rink with his family in his downtime, is sure to find these a welcome addition to his footwear collection.

Author’s Take

Being a hardcore Toronto Raptors fan I love the purple upper with red and white detailing. The suede also looks to be of really nice quality. I just can’t really see myself wearing a pair of Ewings though, they just look so bulky.

Rita Ora and adidas Originals are getting together in 2016 to capitalize off of their successful releases from last year.

This latest collection that has been dubbed the Asian Arena Pack features clothing as well as sneakers inspired by the mythical allure of the Japanese geisha. Included in the collection is the adidas Originals ZX Flux NPS, Tubular, and the classic Stan Smith. Three of the four silhouettes feature tonal uppers with the ZX Flux being the only one covered in a multicolor graphic print. The three other sneakers utilize print placement to emphasize aesthetics and shape. Also included in the Asian Arena pack are outerwear and accessories that also have Eastern Asian influence.

Look for the Rita Ora x adidas Originals Asian Arena Pack at select adidas retailers beginning on February 6th.

Author’s Take

Out of all the sneakers in this collection the only ones I would probably rock with are the graphic ZX Fluxes. Other than that the other pairs I think would look kind of weird on a man.

Behind Adidas' Daring New Approach to Running

What you need to know about the PureBOOST X.

POLLS: Can Pharrell Really Save Billionaire Boys Club and ICECREAM?

With little fanfare and an expected smattering of cynicism, it was announced earlier this month that Pharrell Williams would regain full control of both Billionaire Boys Club and ICECREAM. The labels, launched by Williams in 2005 initially as a proposed collaboration with Reebok and eventually as a partner company to NIGO’s A Bathing Ape, had undergone seismic and catastrophic shifts in reputation in the intervening 11 years since their inception. Their original owner’s return summoned, at best, a morbid curiosity from diehard streetwear fans.

Back in 2005 things had been markedly different. The blend of Williams’ fervent imagination and NIGO’s calculating and experienced business nous had formed an emphatic partnership. BBC’s vibrant, futuristic approach to streetwear captured the attention of a broad market of consumers internationally. From staunch Japanese NIGO disciples, to stateside hip-hop icons, the influential and influenced were fully signed up to the BBC. With Pharrell and NIGO at the helm, it was plain sailing.

When, in 2011 it was revealed that longtime Williams collaborator Jay Z was to invest in BBC, it was perceived that this would be the next step on a course for world domination. Billionaire Boys Club achieved record highs of $25 million to $30 million USD in volume and became nigh-on a household name globally. This unprecedented success however marked the beginning of a decline for the brand and its lesser-known skate-focused subsidiary.

Over the course of the next five years, with 50% of the company relinquished to American brand management goliath Iconix, Billionaire Boys Club suffered. With a parent company also responsible for Umbro, Zoo York and Eckō Unltd, iconic, sought-after designs were rehashed and reproduced in seemingly endless slews of colorways, quality of production dropped as it was shifted from Japan-only to Mexico, Canada, China and Korea, and the magic of the brand diminished. What had begun as a pure and simple streetwear project had descended into pure commerce. With Pharrell happily pursuing more creative and fruitful industries, and NIGO holed away collecting yet more Star Wars paraphernalia, their brand became a by-word for reductive, low-cost streetwear.

Notable exceptions to the downward spiral have appeared in more recent years. Thanks to a savvy and knowledgeable European outlet, Billionaire Boys Club has been able to claw back some credibility. Associations with various grime artists in the UK, collaborations with notable and credible niche brands, and the artistry of creatives from Dexter Navy to Olivia Rose have enabled the brand to salvage a reputation from its decaying heritage. The jury, however, is still very much out on where BBC stands in 2016.

Whilst BBC’s spaceman slowly passed into streetwear folklore and ICECREAM withered into near non-existence, the mastermind behind the brands flourished. Even away from a lucrative and inspirational career in recording, Pharrell’s contributions to fashion and streetwear in the past five years have been varied, commendable and outshone those of BBC. Collaborations with adidas, Uniqlo, G-Star and Chanel have proven the Virginia-born artist to be a diversely talented aesthete. How could he return to BBC and ICECREAM? For pure nostalgia, or to rejuvenate the companies with his new vision?

Only time will be able to tell if Williams can indeed breathe life back into the two companies that once ruled the streetwear roost. Whether he does that through a strong reliance on what succeeded in the past, or what he has learned in recent years, also remains to be seen. The technical knowledge learned through his work at G-Star, the accessible and popular aesthetic gleaned from adidas, or his black book of contacts acquired through countless flirtations with high-end brands will no doubt come in handy. It’d perhaps be wiser however to go back to the start, to small runs of Japanese-made garments that appeal to those who supported his brands from the beginning. Pharrell can save Billionaire Boys Club and ICECREAM if he wants to, but how he does that is entirely up to him. Would you want it in anyone else's hands?

Is There an Adidas NMD Mid Coming?

It sure looks like it.

The adidas Originals Court Vantage Gets a Kangaroo Leather Makeover

Nike Sportswear isn't the only brand getting in on the action at the Australian Open. Hot on the heels of the Swoosh's "Hot Lava" Air Tech Challenge II, colorful QuickStrikes, and matching Tennis Classics (not to mention a polka-dotted drop), adidas has unveiled a special edition of its Court Vantage -- a silhouette that essentially reimagines the classic Rod Laver. Appropriately, the kicks pay homage to the prestigious tennis Grand Slam with a kangaroo leather upper -- in this case opting for a clean combination of white and grey to let the luxurious construction do the talking.

Those in the area can find the limited release in-store at UP THERE this Saturday, January 30 while remaining pairs will hit the store's website at noon local time that same day.
