10 Things Nike Could Do With The Air Yeezy 2 “Red October”

Walk away, 'Ye, just walk on...

Walk away, ‘Ye, just walk on to adidas (allegedly because adidas hasn’t said anything yet)…

Recently Nike and Kanye West broke their ties and we had to ask ourselves, what will happen with the Nike Air Yeezy 2 “Reds” (or “Red October”)? As almost everyone is wondering what will happen to the highly anticipated shoes, Nike has decided to builds up suspense by saying nothing. In all honesty Nike is very admirable for not trashing Kanye’s name and image – even though he has kind of done that himself – after the severing of their bond in such a momentous time. Nike never even got around to setting a release date for the Yeezy 2 Reds before ‘Ye decided he was leaving. Not only did Kanye drop Nike like the ugly step-sister, but he decided he was signing with one of Nike’s main competitors, adidas. Who knows what adidss has in store for Mr. West, but we can be sure that it will be straight fire. However, the real question is will it be better than the collaboration between Nike and ‘Ye?

There is no way to know for sure what Kanye has in store for us, or better yet what designs adidas has in store for him. The real debate, is what Nike will do with the many pairs of Reds produced. We can pretty much make a strong assumption that Nike has already manufactured the Reds considering there were already giveaways of the shoes. So there may be thousands of Yeezy’s sitting in a factory somewhere while Nike decides what to do with them. The possibilities of what Nike could do are endless, so what will they do? We will find out for sure in not too long, but in the meantime we have some possibilities of what they could do.

adidas Says Plans Won’t Change for Derrick Rose

The apparel giant milked #TheReturn all of last season, but it’s hard to imagine adidas going down the same route following Derrick Rose’s second devastating knee injury. The adidas basketball marketing team finds tiself in a tough spot. Per the Daily Herald: “Rose has played in just 50 NBA games — 49 in the regular season — since he led Chicago to the Eastern Conference finals during his MVP season. He was just working his way back from surgery after tearing his left ACL in the 2012 playoff opener when the injury to his right knee cropped up, another dagger for the Bulls and Adidas. That it happened in Portland, just a few miles from the company’s North American headquarters, was another twist. Adidas America president Patrik Nilsson and Portland-based vice president of global basketball Lawrence Norman were sitting courtside and had an up-close view. Had they shed tears, would anyone have blamed them? Rose signed a contract extension with the company in February 2012 that reportedly was worth $185 million to $260 million over 13 or 14 years. Two months later, he tore his ACL. Now, he’s on the mend again. Adidas issued a statement wishing Rose well while pledging its support, and it’s not clear how the latest injury will impact the campaign. ‘I can tell you that we’re focused on supporting Derrick through his recovery,’ Adidas spokeswoman Madeline Breskin said. ‘Our plans remain unchanged at this time and we will update business plans, as needed.’ [...] When it comes to basketball shoe sales in the U.S., Nike has a stranglehold. The Swoosh is by far the leader at 92 percent with Adidas a distant second at 5.5 percent, according to research firm SportsOneSource. On the plus side, the basketball shoe market is up 25 percent in general. Then again, Rose’s signature shoe didn’t fly off the shelves last year, generating $25 million. ‘They really don’t have another marquee player in their stable,’ SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell said.”

NBA Kicks: Nike Air Zoom Generation, Air Jordan 3 “Cool Grey”, adidas Mutombo highlight big night of heat

Not sure what Swaggy P is doing here, but we'll take it...

“Happy Swaggy Joy Joy”

With the NBA taking a night off for the Thanksgiving holiday, we had a feeling that there was going to be plenty of special kicks on display. Case in point, Nick Young wore the Air Jordan 3 “Cool Grey” and overshadowed the Lakers as they rocked their “Hollywood Nights” jerseys, Norris Cole brought back the Nike Air Zoom Generation while LeBron James kept on doing what he does and Tyshawn Taylor doubled up on the adidas retros last night before he bumped into Jason Kidd last night.

As for the rest of the night in kicks, Kyrie Irving debuted a new Nike Hyperdunk 2013 PE, the Phoenix Suns continue to show their sneaker dominance in the Western Conference with a variety of NIKEiD versions of the Nike KD 6 and Nike LeBron 11 and we get cameos from the Air Jordan “3Lab5”, Nike Air Foamposite One “Sport Royal”, and the Air Jordan 6 “Golden Moments”.

Derrick Rose is walking down Penny (Hardaway) lane

Image: 2K Sports

Image: 2K Sports

This past week Derrick Rose went down with a torn meniscus on his right knee, ruling him out for the rest of the 2013-14 NBA season. It feels like a cruel joke to NBA fans; we’re being robbed of one of the most explosive players of this generation and somebody who felt like a throwback to the “good old days” the league when players were not forming super teams and were more than content to build a contender the old-fashioned way. This was supposed to be a justification of Rose’s decision to sit out an entire season even though his teammates were gutting it out with their own injury issues. It’s safe to assume that we all thought that Rose would be rusty out of the gate, but in time he would get his legs back under him again and we would get pre-injury Rose once again.

Instead, we got Penny Hardaway. Wait, what?

This week, we are seeing the release of two new pairs of the Nike Air Penny 5 and a new colorway of the Nike Air Foamposite One. These days, Hardaway is a beloved figure among NBA fans and sneakerheads alike, often being cited as an example of how much better the NBA and its sneaker game was back in the 1990s. Meanwhile, Rose is being destroyed on social media and more legitimate sources as being weak and quitting on his team and for having cursed kicks. As quick as we are to bring Rose down, we are also quick to forget that we’ve seen this story play out before and you’d think that we would know better by now. Yeah…

NBA Kicks: Jodie Meeks sneaks in the Jordan 6 Rings “Bel-Air”

Image: Wish

Image: Wish

Now that we have had a few months to really think about its overall impact in the sneaker game, the Jordan “Bel-Air” collection seems to have come and gone without so much of a bang. Sure, the Air Jordan 5 “Bel-Air” sold out in mere minutes, but it did not pop and start showing up on the streets or on social media for weeks on end like other Jordan retros this year (“Toro Bravo” 4s come to mind). Truth be told, you’ve probably seen more people wear the Jordan CP3.VII “Bel-Air” (except for Chris Paul) than you have any other pair in the collection. Hell, if it weren’t for Jodie Meeks wearing the Jordan 6 Rings “Bel-Air” colorway last night against the Washington Wizards, we wouldn’t have a chance to make anything from that collection a headliner on NBA Kicks.

As for the rest of the night in kicks, Rudy Gay breaks out another PE of the Nike Air Max Hyperposite that we will never get a chance to own, Nike Young wore another Nike Kobe 8 that we could easily recreate on NIKEiD (which you should do pretty soon if you’re interested because the Nike Kobe 9 is coming), Tyshawn Taylor continues to represent for the three stripes in the adidas Crazy 97 and much more.

NBA Kicks: LeBron James actually wears the Nike LeBron 11 and Dwyane Wade cartwheels in the Li-Ning Way of Wade Encore

Well, this happened...

Well, this happened…

Fans of the Nike LeBron 11 can rejoice because the long national nightmare is over for LeBron James has finally worn his latest signature shoes again. Whatever the reasons there were for James to not be wearing the Nike LeBron 11 (we’ve come up with reasons both potentially valid and absolutely absurd that you should read up on), it was apparently such an event that Dwyane Wade did cartwheels in celebration. wade1 wade2

Ok, maybe Wade wasn’t doing cartwheels of joy for LeBron’s kicks. Actually, the bigger mystery to me is who threw that towel at Wade mid-wheel. Money is on Chris Bosh because it’s Chris Bosh and Chris Bosh would do something like that for giggles.

As for the rest of the night in kicks, Gerald Wallace and Ray Allen rock PE versions of the Air Jordan XX8, Paul George continues to make his case for the MVP award in an iD pair of the Nike Kobe 8 while the NBA’s past and present (Tim Duncan in the adidas CrazyQuick) met the league’s future (Anthony Davis in the Nike Air Max Hyperposite PE).
