A Closer Look at the Big Sean x adidas Originals Pro Model II “Hall of Fame”

Having recently showcased the Pro Model II release from adidas Originals and collaborating artist Big Sean, we now take a closer look at the limited edition sneaker. Through highlighting the details and subtle nuances, we see the Pro Model II in all its glory. To start, the artist's sophomore album title is abbreviated onto the gunmetal lace tag, while adidas Originals stamp their logo in corresponding form on the tongue label and heel tab. Scribed on the inner upper is one of the ablum's track titles: "Nothing Is Stopping You," an ethos Sean outwardly subscribes to. The final embellishment sees the sneaker model's name placed on the outer side of the all-black luxury Italian leather upper, crafted with snakeskin patterning. As a reminder, the Big Sean x adidas Originals Pro Model II comes in super limited quantities at select adidas Originals stores for $160 USD.

An Exclusive Look at the adidas Primeknit 2.0

adidas has just taken the wraps off the next generation of Primeknit: the adidas Primeknit 2.0. Thanks to improvements in the knit manufacturing process, the Primeknit 2.0 boasts a minimal, single-layer upper that reduces weight and waste. The upper features a unique "digital burst" pattern across the upper -- a subtle nod to the digital data programmed into the knit machines to create the uppers. More performance-focused than similar offers from its competitors, the adidas Primeknit 2.0 features reinforced panels at the toe and heel for increased abrasion resistance, and sits atop the sole unit from the adidas Adizero Adios 2 -- currently the fastest marathon shoe in competition. The collection starts off with the black/white colorway, which is in stores now, and will continue with additional colorway launches throughout the rest of the year such as blue, yellow and red (unseen).

The adidas Originals Centaur has popped up in this vibrant yellow colorway as a part of the Color Pack. Here the No-Sew version of the retro runner is given a tonal upper with hits of grey and touches of black helping out. These are set to be followed by a red pair and also a blue pair and they will all hopefully touch down at US adidas retailers but for now hit up Size? to grab a pair.

Top 10 Summertime Kicks and Summer Jams of 2013

Image: gifhop

One last chance to do this over the weekend. Image: gifhop

As we head into Labor Day Weekend and start the long road to the holidays (AKA the time of the year when some of you will be using students loans to pay for your kicks because priorities), let’s say goodbye to summertime the only way that sneakerheads know how – by making a list of the season’s best kicks alongside its best summer jams. Wait, what?

Chances are if you’ve champagned and campaigned (©Jalen Rose) the past few months, you’ve heard many of the songs that will comprise this list. It didn’t matter if you were at the club or at the family BBQ or even at the local urban clothing establishment looking for something to match your “Toro Bravo” 4s (spoiler: they didn’t make the list), these were the songs that were blasting in your ears, like it or not. And in those same places, you probably saw these kicks on the feet of many sneakerheads as they try to capture the spirit of the summer.

(Special thanks goes to #TeamKoF member Matty for the assist with some – ok, most – of the songs on this list. He’s basically Nas to my Will Smith)

10. Nike LeBron 10 Low “Championship Pack”/Drake’s “Started From The Bottom”

Kicks and Summer Jams - 10a

It only makes sense (in our own twisted sense of sneaker logic) that the kicks that represent the biggest name in basketball today and the song that represents the biggest (?) name in hip-hop today team up and well, start at the bottom. Also, ‘Bron and Drizzy gave us two of the best GIFs so far this year. It’s hard to argue with their success, but I’m sure a lot of you will…

adidas Relaunches the Stan Smith

The adidas Stan Smith is set to make a triumphant return this year after several seasons spent sitting on the sidelines. The classic tennis shoe -- the first to feature an all-leather upper -- was first known as the adidas Robert Haillet before tennis legend Stan Smith signed on to front the shoe. The Stan Smith will launch in limited numbers on September 4th looking much the same as the original. That means it will have the iconic all-white leather upper with the minimal perforated three stripes branding along with the classic green accents. Following the limited launch, the Stan Smith will receive a wider release in 2014. Stay tuned for a closer look at the shoes.

Sneak Peak: adidas Mutombo

by Sandy Dover / @San_Dova

“Nobody ever thought that one day kids in Africa would dream about playing in the NBA. Maybe they dream of coming to America and getting an education and stay in America and having a wonderful job. To see that dream transformed into coming into the NBA—dreaming of being the next Dikembe Mutombo; being a role model; being a leader in the community; being someone who can come back and inspire our people—this has been my dream.”—Dikembe Mutombo

When the adidas Mutombo was released during the ’92-93 NBA season, Dikembe Mutombo (born Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean Jacque Wamutombo), playing in just his second season, was already an NBA All-Star (as a rookie), a league leader in blocks, rebounds and games played, and was quickly cementing his reputation as one of the most formidable defensive players in the game.

At the time, the player standing 7-2 from Georgetown University was a bit of an oddity—a standout talent from Africa and a found diamond from the former country of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). And so, Mutombo’s success was another beacon to the world that he was more than an ambassador for his country: He could dominate the game.

In reality, the adidas Mutombo was an opportunity for a major footwear entity to establish itself as the premier brand for a global clientele in a raw market. North American NBA stars like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and even good ol’ Chuck Taylor moved units around the world, but never before was there an African transplant who had a signature shoe playing in the best basketball league in the world, and adidas and the Congolese native accomplished that breakthrough with his signature Mutombo sneaker. (Olajuwon’s signature Etonic and Spalding shoes don’t qualify. Sorry, Dream.)

Released for the very first time since 1993, the Mutombo is one of the most coveted shoes in the retro catalog of adidas’ footwear vault. For its time, the Mutombo shoe wasn’t just about capitalizing on Dikembe’s dual ethnic and national heritage, it was actually a strong performer and notable style accessory. Produced before adidas’ famous innovations like the Feet You Wear, adiPRENE and SPRINTFRAME technologies, the Mutombo was, and still is, built tough, relying on good ol’ fashioned synthetic leather and suede, thermoplastic straps (a predecessor to the Equipment and adipower Howard 2 silhouettes) and rubber, all stitched down strong into a semi-cupsole that is playable indoors and outdoors.

As far as appearance, the adidas Mutombo has become a kind of new age relic of the past, an artifact that is a literal sign of the times. As the 1990s came and moved, Afrocentrism became stylistically popular as its own theme through brands like Cross Colours, music artists like A Tribe Called Quest, and accessory trends such as Africa continent-shaped medallions, all of which were all the rage; iconic movies like Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing and X became culturally definitive aspects of ‘90s pop and African-American culture, which only reinforced the rightful place of the adidas sneaker.

The Mutombo in its debut became an instant footwear emblem, using the core pan-African colors of red, gold, green and black to marry the design together; joined by the centers special “M55” Congolese shield logo and black/white diamond tribal pattern, the Mutombo became simultaneously timeless and nostalgic.

Though the Afrocentric style movement enjoyed its glory and gradually faded as the ‘90s came to exalt other forms of art and fashion seemingly every year after 1994, the Mutombo faded from memory as well. As both the player and the shoe enjoy its initial limelight, the tech era of basketball footwear began and placed a premium on the technical aspect. Dikembe ended up continuing on to play 18 total years in the League, having firmly established himself as one of the most intimidating defensive forces in NBA history, finishing his career as a Houston Rocket (although more famously known as an Atlanta Hawk and Philadelphia 76er).

More importantly, as “Deke” wound down his career, he became much more active in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders, a socially conscious program facilitated by the League to meet the civic needs of third-world countries and continents where basketball can be used to empower children and families that living in significant lack (especially in his war-torn Congo homeland).

The heart of it all, the Mutombo invokes the memory of Dikembe not only as a footwear touchstone athlete, but also as a man who contributed to the zeitgeist of the ‘90s, an elite-level athlete and a willing and able giver to the world and many nations within the continent of Africa.

The adidas Mutombo is a celebration of greatness, in flesh and bone, in rubber and suede.

Goodbye of the Mack: Tracy McGrady’s career in pictures, GIFs, adidas kicks

Image: Getty Images/NBA

Image: Getty Images/NBA

If you had to come up with a list of NBA players whose careers would have benefited greatly or adversely affected by today’s social media cycle, Tracy McGrady is one of those names that could top both lists. On one hand, he would have been an even bigger superstar than he was because he had a knack for making meme-worthy moments like this dunk over Shawn Bradley. You could see adidas making “T-Mac Dunk Face” shirts with that one. Tracy-McGrady-Dunks-on-Shawn-Bradley

And then there was the time when he bounced the ball off the backboard and slammed it home during the NBA All-Star Game. Commonplace now, but mind-blowing back in those halcyon days of the early 2000s.

tracy-mcgrady-backboard-dunk-o

Oh, and what about his crazy comeback against the San Antonio Spurs, when he scored 13 points in 33 seconds? The day after, if Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless were around ESPN at that time, they would be calling this the greatest moment in the history of the world (#embracedebate while I #bangmyheadagainstthewall).

tracy-mcgrady-fist-pump-o

Wait, what was my other point? Sorry, you could see how easy it was to fall down that rabbit hole of T-Mac highlights. More than any other player from his generation, McGrady made everything seem effortless; whether it was a graceful glide to the rim that was occasionally punctuated by some poor sap trying to block his shot or shooting three-pointers from crazy distances just because he can, T-Mac in his prime was akin to putting a video game on easy mode and watching the carnage it wrought.

But like another Orlando Magic superstar that wore #1 (Penny Hardaway, not Gilbert Arenas, kids), injuries and bad luck (word to Grant Hill) would rob us of watching McGrady perform on a stage that’s a little more important than the All-Star Game. Some say a trip to the Darfur region of the Sudan changed his life outlook and his humanitarian efforts actually affected his play, while others are quick to point out that he just never had the same maniacal dedication to the game that a Kobe Bryant did (who just recently said that McGrady was the toughest guy he ever had to guard). McGrady was so highly thought of by his fans and his peers that they expected more from him and it’s a shame that we’ll probably never know if we did see him peak or if he was holding back just a tad, not because he wanted to troll us, but because it wasn’t in his nature.

Just how much did McGrady matter? When word got out that he was going to sign with the Spurs for the stretch run this past season, he became a trending topic and when he checked into a game to play garbage minutes in the Western Conference Finals, he got a standing ovation while they played Mark Morrison’s “Return of the Mack”. He went from people trashing him for his failures to sympathizing with him all the way to Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Fans don’t do that unless that player made an impact in the league for the better. We’ll always wonder what could have been with Tracy Mcgrady, but we should appreciate that what we did get from him was pretty good too.

It’s not inconceivable we will be talking about T-Mac making it to the Hall of Fame someday. He might be punished by the voting committee for reasons unknown (see guys like Bernard King and how long they had to wait to get in) and not get in on the first ballot, but McGrady will get there eventually. Maybe we’ll even get a “Hall of Fame” colorway of the iconic adidas T-Mac 1 and 2 when that happens.

When we talked to adidas guys Harrison Barnes and Kenneth Faried last week, both were excited to tell us that they were going to be wearing the T-Mac 2 this upcoming season. If the retro rollout this upcoming season is done correctly, adidas could have second model (the Crazy 8 being the first) in their hands that could become an evergreen sneaker much in the same way the Air Jordan 1 has become a staple for Jordan Brand and the Question is for Reebok.

Kobe got shook...

Kobe got shook…

With that in mind, here’s a look back at Tracy McGrady’s career in pictures and GIFs and videos not only with the Raptors, Magic, Rockets, Knicks, Pistons, Hawks and Spurs (well, damn, that was a lot of teams) as a member of the adidas Brotherhood (remember those commercials?).
