It’s about that time where soccer or football, whichever term your prefer, starts to take over the Internet. It’s not so much the World Cup that is the topic of our discussion this time around, but the Generation Adidas Cup in which the top two MLS Academy teams from each three qualifying regions advance to the Championship Division. There, they will be joined by six international youth sides and then let the games begin!
Those that don’t make it in the top two of their region move on to the Premier Division and are paired up with both European and South American competition. This transcontinental tournament has involved a number of high profile clubs, including River Plate and Stoke City. So far, international teams have yet to be named but Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have both been invited.
The Generation Adidas Cup has racked up a number of structural changes over the years, so the organizations involved this year will be reaping all the benefits and are in for even more excitement. The Sounders U-16 team was one of the first that returned home without a qualification, but it’s important to note that their loss in three matches, they managed to score at least seven times. If that’s not enough to prove this year’s Generation Adidas Cup is going to be exciting, then I don’t know what is.
