Here Is The Woman Who Was Responsible For Designing The Nike Swoosh

Have you ever wondered who was the person who actually designed and came up with the Nike Swoosh logo?

Portland State University has the story for us as they recently got to interview Carolyn Davidson. While attending PSU back in 1971, Davidson didn’t have the funds to enroll in a oil painting class and was approached by “a tall man in a suit” which just happened to be Nike co-founder Phil Knight. At the time Knight was a little-known start-up entrepreneur teaching a PSU accounting course to help make ends meet. Knight was also working with a Japanese footwear company and needed someone to create charts and graphs to show executives who were coming from Japan. So he ended up giving Carolyn Davidson the job which led to more work with Knight and his emerging company, Blue Ribbon Sports.

Around this time Knight has been working with University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman to develop a new running shoe and a new company. So he asked Davidson if she would be interested in designing a “shoe stripe.” Davidson recalled that Knight liked the three-band logo of adidas and that “he wanted it to look like speed.” After numerous attempts and time running out as boxes needed to be printed, Davidson came up with what we all now know as the “Swoosh.”

When Knight made the final decision on the design he said, “Well, I don’t love it, but maybe it will grow on me.” And grow on him it did. Now the Nike Swoosh is renowned around the world. The crazy part is that Davidson only billed Knight $35 for her design. Don’t worry though, a few years later she was given an undisclosed amount of Nike stock.
