The Nike SB Koston 3 is definitely a new look for the signature SB line. Being that Koston is a big fan of Flyknit, he felt the need to utilize it on his own signature line and was able to do so by way of the Flyknit collar. Said to be inspired by the Nike Magista football boot, Nike SB applied it to their sneakers for the first time ever. The use of Flyknit technology gives you a locked-in feel around the ankle which definitely helps when you’re on top of the board. The shoe also goes on to use the Nike Hyperfeel concept to help “create a symbiotic relationship between your feet and your board.” In other words, the shoe will include the drop-in Nike Lunarlon midsole which comes thinner around the toes to enhance boardfeel. The heel features thicker Nike Lunarlon foam and a responsive Nike Zoom Air unit to help riders land softly.
Koston goes on to say:
“You can make the most cushioned shoe ever, but if you can’t feel your board, then what’s the point? The Koston 3 is designed to be an extension of your foot. You’re trying to get as close to that barefoot feeling as possible.”
Nike designers also strategically placed areas of grip and durability in key areas, which is reflected in the thin, textured web-rubber sidewall and outsole. These areas help provide added flexibility and helps riders flick their skateboards. The more the rubber breaks in, the better it performs. There’s no doubt that the Nike SB Koston 3 is a new look for Nike SB, but Koston went on to say this:
“If it’s disruptive, so be it,I’m not afraid of change. That’s when progress is made.”
The Nike SB Koston 3 will officially release on March 1st at select Nike SB retailers for $150. You like this new look? Sound off below.

Author’s Take
Change is good. I have nothing against the traditional look of SB signature models, but if the shoe performs better, I’m sure people will get used to the look.
