Mamba Week: Top 10 adidas Crazy 8 Colorways

NBA

NBA

Originally released during the 1997-98 NBA season, we are getting real close to the 20th anniversary of the adidas Crazy 8, then known as the adidas KB8, the first signature shoe of Kobe Bryant. Now think about that for a second; everybody talks about there being an entire generation of kids who are now in high school who have never seen Michael Jordan play in a Chicago Bulls uniform, but there is also an entire generation of kids who don’t know that Kobe Bryant was an adidas spokesman, wore no. 8 on his jersey, rocked a decent afro and a burgeoning rap career. Ok, that last part was an exaggeration (barely), but prior to signing with Nike in 2003, Bryant had already gone through a complete signature shoe line.

Despite no longer having Kobe under contract, adidas would retro the KB8 years later and change the name to the Crazy 8 (the subtlety of that name is not lost on us, adidas). In the preceding years, the Crazy 8 would become their version of the Air Jordan 1: an evergreen sneaker that could come back numerous times and look and feel fresh each time. The pinnacle of adidas design and technology (Feet You Wear FTW, yo) at the time, the Crazy 8 is a time capsule for that golden era of sneakers much in the same way people look at the Air Jordan 11 (and 12 because it’s better, dammit), the Reebok Question, the Nike Air Penny 1 and countless other examples. So before we move on to the next chapter in the Black Mamba’s signature shoe story as part of Mamba Week, let’s take a look back at where it began with the Top 10 adidas KB8 Crazy 8 Colorways.
