Damian Lillard Tutors Andrew Wiggins In This New Foot Locker Commerical

Adidas/Foot Locker’s new commercial featuring Damian Lillard, Andrew Wiggins and Jimmy Kimmel teaches us a very important lesson in athlete comedy.

Some athletes try and go over the top with humor, not understanding that there is such a thing as too much. Other athletes cannot shake their stiffness, while others still are just plain unfunny. The key to humor – not just for an athlete, but for anyone – is to embrace one’s self. LeBron James succeeded in “Trainwreck” because he embraced the fact that he’s corny. He did not shy from it, he turned the corny to 11 and it worked.

Damian Lillard’s is a dry wit, best employed subtly. Let it come within the course of the conversation. He doesn’t even need to make a joke, just deliver the line right for it to be funny. We don’t quite yet know what Andrew Wiggins’ sense of humor is, but he plays very well off Lillard here, absolutely nailing the “Loofa” line.

Trying to be funny will almost never result in actually being funny. Your best shot at making someone laugh, as Lillard and Wiggins show, is to simply be yourself.
