With a goal to put an end to ocean plastic pollution, adidas and Parley for the Oceans have unveiled a unique footwear concept to help raise awareness.
The sleek silhouette consists of an upper made with ocean plastic content and a 3D-printed midsole crafted from recycled polyester and gillnets, which are essentially a series of panels of meshes that are designed to allow fish to get only their head through the netting, but not their body. While a mass production of this particular pair is not concrete, the previously featured recycled Ultra Boost may see a release sometime next year.
Eric Liedtke, adidas Group Executive Board member responsible for Global Brands expressed:
“The industry can’t afford to wait for directions any longer. Together with the network of Parley for the Oceans, we have started taking action and creating new sustainable materials and innovations for athletes. The 3D-printed ocean plastic shoe midsole stands for how we can set new industry standards if we start questioning the reason of what we create. We want to bring everyone from the industry to the table and create sustainable solutions for big global problems.”

Author’s Take
Not only is it for a great cause, but the design is pretty sweet as well. I hope that this concept will actually come to fruition. The colorway on this pair is really nice as well, especially that 3d printed sole unit.
