KoF Insiders: @Thurzday, Every Day

KoF Insiders: Thurz, Every Day (1) KoF Insiders: Thurz, Every Day (2) KoF Insiders: Thurz, Every Day (3) KoF Insiders: Thurz, Every Day (4)

You can’t even type Thurzday in a search engine without seeing “Blood on the Canvas,” appear. His new album is highly-anticipated thanks to his 2011 critically acclaimed debut album, L.A. Riot. Thurz says “Blood on the Canvas” serves as a journal of youthful vanity to the growth of a young man and it’s coming soon.

Thurz isn’t just known for his bars, he’s also known as an L.A. trendsetter. Last year, adidas presented the lyricist as a premier tastemaker and contributor to Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Lakers “all in for L.A.” campaign and Nike has featured him in its AF1 campaign, too.

Style is just part of who Thurz is, every day.

Earliest memory of kicks:

My earliest memory is being 6 years old and copping my Jordan VIs on Market St. before departing to Belize with my Mom

You were part of the Adidas x Lakers “All in for L.A” campaign – How is sneaker culture in L.A. different than other places you have been?

The sneaker culture in L.A. is alive and thriving. Growing up in Inglewood, the first spot that friends and I copped kicks from was Inglewood Sports, the Inglewood Swapmeet and Slauson Supermall. More boutique shoe stores started to pop up with more access to more rare and exclusive releases. L.A. is one of the biggest markets for shoe releases due to the entertainment industry and it’s direct correlation with fashion…only cities that compare are NY and Tokyo.

As a Nike AF1 ambassador of sorts – what’s your favorite?

The Eggplant Foamposite

What’s the inspiration behind “Blood on the Canvas”?

“Blood on the Canvas” serves as an accumulation of journal entries ranging from youthful vanity to dealing with issues and becoming a young man. It gives the listener insight to who Thurz is, the Inglewood hustler always trying to improve the quality of life and make it all rhyme.

Music and fashion go hand in hand, how does you style reflect your sound

My music represents timeless quality from the production, lyrics and vocal performance. This goes hand in hand with my style as I am always searching for rare, timeless pieces to rock, from vintage sports attire to some of my favorite brands like Nisus Hotel, Brooklyn Circus, Carhartt, Visvim, Consortium Adidas, etc.

Kanye is one of the few non-athletes to successfully make a pair of celebrated kicks. You are a tastemaker. Do you see yourself delving into design in the future

Definitely. I was one of the first artist to design several celebrated snapbacks from my “Land of the Kings” hats with 3 colorways that sold out to my “L.A. Riots” hat with 2 colorways that sold out online and at Colors in DTLA. I was one of the first independent artist with a shoe deal a few years back and I’m definitely looking to contribute to designing a classic shoe….stay tuned

One of your favorite 2013 pick-ups?

The Mutombos…a very dope release.

If those shoes were a song on your project – they would be:

GOTDAMN GOTDAMN, or the radio version AH MAN since I’ve gotten some compliments from some fly ladies while sporting them
