When I say Anna Bediones is a day one sneakerhead, it’s true. There’s a family story about her mom going into labor while watching a Bulls game. Anna came into this world influenced by basketball culture and her parents put her in kicks as soon as her tiny feet could fit into a pair. It’s a love she grew into, so much so that she writes about kicks for Complex Sneakers and Finish Line. Get to know Anna (@atothebed)

Earliest memory of kicks:

For my first birthday, my parents rented out a giant McDonald’s and laced me in red adidas Gazelles.

New Year’s Resolution:

Stop hesitating – if you want it, go get it.

What’s currently on your feet:

Air Jordan I Black/Red with matching Nike Elite Socks.

Describe the sneaker culture in your city:

While Toronto houses a repertoire of hypebeasts (also known as the Screw Face Capital), the sneaker culture here is pretty heavy and is home to some top-notch sneaker boutiques. Toronto is also currently hosting “Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture” at the Bata Shoe Museum, an exhibition about the history of sneaker culture – the first of its kind in North America.

How’d you get into sneaker writing?

I inherited the sneaker habit from my pops, and the more I got into them, the more I wanted to know. I got into reading sneaker magazines and reviews, and never really thought of it as something I could do until recently. An opening came up at Complex Sneakers and I figured, why not? Shortly after, I landed my blogging gig with Finish Line, a series called “Not Just for the Gym” where I post tips for styling sportswear. My advice is to read – a lot – and write even more. Contribute to discussions and provide meaningful conversation instead of trolling all the time. And most of all, be true to yourself. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

I’m a big fan of sportswear, as are you, what’s your favorite new brand?

I’m really into Ronnie Fieg’s KITH brand. Sadly I don’t personally own anything from his collections because they always sell out. I love the cut of his elusive Mercer pants and the craftsmanship looks fantastic. I need to get my hands on a pair, asap.

I know you hoop – what position do you play and which player inspires your style?

I play point guard – I like to control the floor and have good court vision. Although we played different positions, Michael Jordan inspires my style – not that I think I’m anywhere as talented, but his competitive attitude and passion inspires me. He also inspires my sportswear/sneaker style (let’s ignore his denim and suit game though). That’s right, I want to be like Mike!

Biggest misconception about women in sneaker culture:

The biggest misconception is that we’re all hypebeasts that only do it for attention, and/or our boyfriends put us on. I was into sneakers before I even liked boys!

Kicks that mean the most to you:

The Jordan “XI” Space Jams mean the most to me because it represents my childhood most vividly. It was also the first retro sneaker that I really got hype over.

If that pair were a song, it would be:

“I Believe I Can Fly” by R.Kelly because, duh.
