You know how the saying goes, “You have to spend money to make money.” That should be Nike’s new motto because the way they spent money in the last year is pretty crazy to believe.
Nike pays money to everyone from teams to individual athletes and even leagues. I mean they just signed a new deal with the NBA worth $1 billion to have the right to be their official merchandise providers. Their spending ways have gotten so high lately that as of May 31, 2015 they spent a whopping $6.192 billion on endorsements within the last year. Compare that to the $4.704 billion they spent the year before and that’s a 32% increase.
Here is the breakdown for Nike’s endorsement spending from 2002 to now so you can see how much they spend each year.

2010 | $3.790 | -10% | -$0.41 |
2009 | $4.201 | 10% | $0.37 |
2008 | $3.827 | 37% | $1.03 |
2007 | $2.794 | 70% | $1.15 |
2006 | $1.642 | -2% | -$0.04 |
2005 | $1.685 | -2% | -$0.03 |
2004 | $1.713 | 19% | $0.27 |
2003 | $1.442 | 32% | $0.35 |
2002 | $1.094 | NA | NA |
I guess you can say that Nike isn’t afraid to spend money if it means getting what they want. So does this mean that they’ll match the deal that adidas made to James Harden? Cause if they don’t it’s because they don’t want to, not because they can’t afford to.
