From a lawsuit against a trio of designers who moved to adidas, Nike is in the spotlight once again, this time regarding an illegal dispute of allegedly stolen sneakers.
Ex-Nike employee and promotional product manager, Kyle Yamaguchi, along with accomplice Tung Wing Ho, whom had succeeded Yamaguchi in 2012, illegally stole sneakers off the Nike Oregon campus and sold them for financial gain. Also involved in the dealings was Jason Keating, a shoe dealer from Fort Myers, Florida, who paid $679,650 for more than 630 pairs of shoes that Yamaguchi and Ho stole from Nike between September 2012 and March 2014.
Yamaguchi stood before a federal judge in Nike’s hometown of Portland, Oregon on Wednesday and presented a binder full of evidence which included emails, spreadsheets and even a PowerPoint presentation proving his own guilt and that of fellow conspirators Jason Keating and Tung Wing Ho. Earnings were reported at $200,000 for Yamaguchi and $600,000 for Ho, while some of the stolen inventory recovered from Ho’s residence included hundreds of pairs of Nike Look Sees – most of which were sold to collectors and small retailers across the country.
Following Yamaguchi’s cooperation and extensive exposure of the scheme, the judge sentenced him to five years probation and 50 hours of voluntary community service.
Both Tung Wing Ho and Jason Keating have pleaded not guilty to the charge, while their trials have been scheduled for April 21st.
