Every generation has it’s movie – a film that captures the spirit of the era – a coming-of-age classic. But “Dope” movie writer and director Rick Famuyiwa managed to deliver a movie that brings together two generations. The teens of the 90s and the teens of today.
In the movie, three Inglewood nerds — Malcolm, Diggy and Jib — are surviving their senior year caught between college applications, drugs, gangs and change. If you remember the movie “Fresh,” imagine it ate “Go” and “The Breakfast Club” and you might have an idea of what this film dives into as it smashes stereotypes and celebrates individuality. These kids are punk and hip-hop, geeks and 90s fashion and music fanatics with a mean shoe game.
Malcolm is no stranger to getting his kicks stolen. His collection includes adidas Stan Smith, Fire Red Jordan 3s, Powder Blue Jordan 3s and his crew can be seen in a variety of Timberland boots, Air Force Ones, adidas Superstar, adidas slip-ons and more.
Costume designer Patrick Milani said he referenced early rap and studied books like A Time Before Crack and Back in the Day by Jamel Shabazz for inspiration.
The way it was scripted, the Jordan III was central to a scene. So Patrick found the Fire Red 3’s and a pair of Powder Blue’s too. An assistant told him to scuff them because no one would believe the shoes were that crispy and clean. Patrick laughs as he recalls that day on set. He kept the shoes fresh. The assistant clearly didn’t understand that scuffing them would make it less believable for a sneakerhead.
For Patrick it was important to stay true to sneaker culture.
“Kicks are a mainstay,” he says. “Sneakers are a statement. Everyone wears them and if you have the right sneaker you can put on a white t-shirt and jeans and you are done. If you have one the wrong kicks, it’s like, uhh…”
(You can also pair the right kicks with a Dope Movie x Billionaire Boys Club tee or tank.)
Patrick says sneaker culture has expanded its reach in the fashion world. There was a time when Gucci, YSL and the like would never touch kicks. Now they send sneakers down the runway. They hire designers out from under Nike. A fresh pair of kicks, like a good pair of jeans, are timeless.
And one thing Patrick appreciates is how brands are evolving. Nike has always been a force, but other brands are making style a priority. Patrick feels adidas is reclaiming it’s power. In Dope, the Jordan 3’s are hard to miss but adidas (Superstar, Stan Smith, slip-ons) make multiple appearances. Patrick, in his personal life, has always been team Nike, but he says the adidas Boost really won him over.
“I am a runner and a total Nike freak, but the Boost is amazing. I literally all of a sudden converted to adidas.”
You like what you like. That’s dope.
