The adidas Rose 4 is going to be a make or break sneaker for adidas Basketball. After a full season without their star athlete Derrick Rose that advertently affected the sales of the adidas Rose 3 and its subsequent releases, adidas is hoping a dynamite season on all fronts to rebound from the past 18 months. And based on our first real look at the adidas D Rose 4 and the marketing behind it, they are the very least off to a good start.
The most glaring feature that people have focused of the adidas D Rose 4 is the split colorway on the upper. When the colorways started leaking online – not to mention Rose himself rocking them in public – there was as much a split reaction not unlike the split on the actual shoe. Some were excited to see the possibilities for the shoe and colorway stories it could potentially tell while others were quick to discredit them without having seen them in person. Judging from the people I managed to speak to at the Rose 4 reveal, it was definitely not their plan to have everybody see those colorways first. In adidas’ perfect world, our first look at the Rose 4 would have been the uniform black colorway that we received at the event and then they would subsequently explain the reasoning behind the design and then roll out the other colorways.
According to Derrick Rose, he wants people to be able to rock a shoe that works for all occasions and that he would never put out a shoe that looks bad. Obviously everybody’s perception of the Rose 4 will be different and it will be up to them to decide with their wallet, but for those looking for a sleek pair of kicks with some versatility, the Rose 4 is a solid choice. It’s an evolution of what started with the Rose 3, but now has the tech behind the adidas Crazy Quick’s outsole and GEOFIT padding around the ankle for a more comfortable fit. I felt like I had to break it in for a few hours much like Crazy Quick and I haven’t had a chance to play in them, but the potential is definitely there for adidas. Now it’s up to Rose’s performance and sneakerhead’s willingness to be open-minded.
Meanwhile, adidas also revealed their Rose 4 apparel line which features Rose’s excellent logo. From the t-shirt to the hoodie and backpack, the logo works so well that if you were the type to go for a uniform fit with matching logos on everything, this is not too shabby. It was interesting that the hoodie and sweatpants that adidas provided us wasn’t a match, but they work well enough on their own.
