The Life: What It’s Like To Attend A Sneaker Event For The First Time

Editor’s Note: Sometimes the best plans are the ones that don’t go as expected. Thanks to a scheduling conflict, I was without a video team to record this past Friday’s adidas event at Undefeated Los Angeles featuring Snoop Dogg and the launch of his brand new cleat and trainer. Luckily for me, fellow Kicks On Fire staff writers JuanOnAKind and Andres Carrillo (spoiler alert: they’re brothers) were more than willing to tag along and attend their first ever sneaker event as members of the media. Needless to say, they saw and got to experience things that they probably never saw coming . Afterwards, I told them to write about it because I wanted to see what a sneaker event was like through the eyes of a first timer again. These are their stories…

Recapping My First Ever Sneaker Event With 1 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, Snoop Dogg

A typical Friday night for me probably consists of staying home after finishing up work and watching some NBA or maybe some Sons of Anarchy on Netflix. However, this past Friday there was no NBA and unfortunately for a lot of us, Sons of Anarchy is over. So what did I do? I was invited by Juan Martinez (our Editor-In-Chief) to attend my first sneaker release event with Kicks On Fire at UNDEFEATED in Los Angeles. The event was for Snoop Dogg’s newest adidas releases, the Snoop Dogg adizero 5-Star 4.0 Uncaged cleat and Gameday Trainer.

We arrived at Undefeated at 6:45 and the event was scheduled to start at 7. Snoop arrived in style (and 30 minutes late because he’s Snoop) with a camera in his hands, snapping pictures of everyone waiting for him outside the store. However, before he arrived, a huge double decker bus that read “Long Beach Poly Varsity Football” parked on the curb with about 100 students inside. Then the people directing the event brought out box after box of Snoop’s newest shoes to give to every single student on the bus, which I thought was pretty cool. Since I was part of the “media” group (yeah, I felt pretty special with that orange wristband on), I was able to go into the store and snap pictures of Snoop and the kids as they came into the store in groups of 5. This is exactly what was happening inside. It felt pretty surreal and cool being around Snoop Dogg (who was dancing and lively the entire time he was there) and being the first to see a shoe in person before it actually releases to the public.

After Snoop finished taking pictures with all of the students from Long Beach Poly and some of his fans who bought his new sneakers, he ran across the street to the old Undefeated shop, stopping traffic and snapping pictures of cars, in a way that only Snoop could get away with. We followed him in hopes of being able to interview and ask him a couple of questions regarding his new sneakers. After about 15 minutes of Snoop doing “Snoop things” he was ready for the interview and the time had finally arrived. Team KoF conducted an interview that covered the inspiration behind his new kicks, what he thinks of when he sees the shoes and a couple of more things. I don’t wanna give everything away so you can watch the interview for yourself when it drops tomorrow.

To conclude our night Juan, JuanofaKind and myself decided to hit up Pink’s Hot Dogs and indulge in some hot dogs, chili cheese bacon fries and onion rings. My first sneaker release event was a great success and a unique experience. I’m already looking forward to “The Next Episode.”

My First Kicks On Fire Event Consisted Of Kickin’ It With Snoop Dogg On A Friday Night In LA

It all began when I got an email from Juan, our Editor-In-Chief here at Kicks on Fire, asking if my brother and I would like to attend an event at Undefeated in LA where they will be hosting a Snoop Dogg x Undefeated x adidas event centered around the introduction of the brand new Football cleat and trainer that Snoop Dogg and adidas collaborated on. Hmm, Netflix or get to meet Snoop Dogg on a Friday night? I’m sure you know how I replied.

My brother and I drove to LA not knowing what to expect and excited for whatever is to come. We finally got to meet Juan in person and after we introduce ourselves , he briefly lets us know that he wanted us to be here so we could get a first hand look at what these type of events are all about.

20150529_192036The event begins and the first thing we notice is this big two-story bus carrying what seems to be an endless amount of high school football players from Long Beach Poly High, which happens to be Snoop’s alma matter. Every single student on the bus was greeted with both pairs of the Snoop Dogg x adidas collab cleats and shoes that were set to be on display that evening. Once they all received their shoes, Snoop Dogg finally arrives and the event begins.

20150529_195918The entire event was to showcase the upcoming release of both shoes that Snoop Dogg and adidas worked on in their collaborative efforts and to make sure that the first people to receive them would be the students from Long Beach Poly. Once we got our wristbands we were permitted to go inside the store where the DJ was spinning Snoop’s favorite tracks while he took a picture with every single student there. The store also had the shoes and apparel on display for anyone looking to buy a pair.

We see Snoop Dogg run across the street into another building where only he and his crew were allowed to go in. Being that we were part of Kicks on Fire, they also let us in. As we patiently wait for the chance to interview Snoop Dogg, I begin to snack on the complimentary vegetable tray (What, I was hungry!) Juan, Andres and I simply witness Snoop Dogg doing “Snoop Dogg” things. Finally we get to interview him. Andres is recording, I’m taking pictures and Juan is doing the actual interviewing. At this very moment, I think to myself, “Woah, I’m actually taking part in interviewing Snoop Dogg on a Friday night in LA, for work!” That’s dope! The interview went great, once it ended I formally introduced myself to Snoop, we chopped it up about my hometown (Pomona), he let me know he’s got nothin’ but love for my ‘hood (highlight of the night!), I gave him a dap, and we were on our way. Overall, it was definitely an amazing experience that couldn’t have gone any better. I’m already looking forward to the next event I get the opportunity to attend, but for now this will suffice. #TeamKoF.

20150529_214714P.S. Shout out to Juan for taking us to Pink’s Hot Dogs in LA, a great way to end the night and satisfy my appetite, since that vegetable tray wasn’t really cuttin’ it.
