The NBA Slam Dunk Contest, depending on who you talk to, is either the greatest thing in the world or the most overblown event that the league puts out every year. Despite the illustrious pedigree of the contest that boasts past winners like Jordan, Wilkins, Bryant and Carter, the past several years have been marred by having too many cooks in the kitchen. One year it’s a stupid wheel, the next year there’s a teammate requirement and the year after that it’s East versus West but some unknown entity can still win it as an individual or some BS like that. For example, John Wall technically is the reigning dunk champ, but is he really?
Not to sound like Magic Johnson or anything, but we need the dunk contest back. We need the top stars to stop worrying about their personal brands and put it all out there on the line at least once. LeBron James has famously not participated in the dunk contest and that will always be something of a gaping hole in his resume, win or lose. What we also need is for these young guys who are made to participate to wear some actual heat. We actually went for a stretch where the winning dunker wore the Nike Air Max Hyperize, the Nike Air Max Fly and the Nike Air Max Destiny TB. A team bank colorway?! Yeesh…
Anyways, let’s take a look back at how great things used to be with the Top 10 NBA Slam Dunk Championship Kicks as we kick off NBA All-Star Week here on the site.
