The Life: Less Than 24 Hours To Live In Portland For The adidas D Lillard 1 Launch

Arrive at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, leave at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. That was the only way I was going to be able to pull off attending the launch of the adidas D Lillard 1, Damian Lillard’s first signature shoe. Normally such a turnaround time wouldn’t be worth the effort, but it’s very rare that we see not one, not two, not three but new four signature lines launch all within a few months of each other and to be a part of all four in some form is something that just had to happen. This really is the brave new world of basketball shoes. Plus, it’s in Portland, and if you’re any kind of sneaker enthusiast, you can’t turn that down. PDX – the colloquial term for Portland – is where the magic happens.

It’s a sunny day in Portland and I’m kind of livid. I’ve visited PDX a few times now and every time it’s been relatively cool and bright like a nice California day in the springtime. I want to see the rain and gloom that everybody who I that lives there talks about and dreads for 9-10 months out of the year. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve earned the reputation of bringing the sun to Portland. Yes, this stuff matters to me. Did you think we were just going to talk about sneakers the whole time?

Noon – Fancy Hotel Shenanigans

Normally the drive to downtown isn’t that long, but we finally arrive at hotel and try to take a quick nap before the festivities begin… until I realized that I didn’t have any idea what we were doing because I didn’t have a schedule in hand. So a few minutes, a panicked email and a duffel bag that I didn’t get during check-in later, I found out we were having lunch at the rooftop of the hotel which looked like this…

Stupid bright and sunny day.

If you’ve never been to either of the big two headquarters in PDX, they’re basically like college campuses. Sure, there are hints and signs that tell you that you’re in the presence of greatness and stuff, but really, they’re just giant buildings of awesome where you might see random superstar athletes walking by like they’re just part of the staff and state of the art fitness facilities because product testing for things you may never see hit retail. Not really doing a good job of underselling it, am I?
