NFL veteran cornerback Tarell Brown formerly of the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders talked with us about kicks, giving back and how sneakers are a lot like fine wines.
Earliest memory of kicks:
Nike Cortez or L.A. Gear, Bo Jackson and even the Barry Sanders.
Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind Brown’s Kids:
My inspiration behind Brown’s Kids was to give exposure to the young kids in my city and also give back to less fortunate. The biggest thing for me was to help where I felt like we were missing out on and lacking – like education and empowerment. Also to bring people to our city to inspire! There are bigger things outside of Dallas and Mesquite and I want the people in my city to see those things.
Who inspired you as a kid?
My parents.
What do you look for in kicks:
Style, the style has to be right for my eye for that day. Your eye is different every day. You have all different types of shoes and you bought them at all different times. You may have bought one shoe and another was just as dope but your eye depending on that day didn’t catch it.
Describe your athletic style using a specific shoe:
Air Max ’95
Biggest misconception about athlete sneakerheads:
That they blow their money on sneakers. When I purchase sneakers I look at it as an investment, there’s an art to it. It’s similar to fine wine, or golf clubs. When you go out on the golf course you don’t want to have a $20 club, you want a fly club. Everyone wants to get the best of what they can afford. Regardless what it is. At the end of the day, you look good you play good.
What’s your favorite go-to shoe and why?
I would say a high top all white Air Force One, or any type of shell toe adidas. Those are classics, you can rock them with anything, with jeans, joggers, shorts.
You’re packing light for a trip today and have to pick one pair of kicks – Yeezy or Jordan:
Jordans, by far.
Sneaker release you are most looking forward to:
I’m a Jordan Retro 5 guy, love Retro 5s.
If that shoe were a song it would be:
“Seen it all”- Young Jeezy and Jay Z
