Buena Vista Pictures
One of the most frequently asked questions we get either through the @kicksonfire Twitter or our own personal accounts is yo, when is that hot retro gonna drop “what is our sneaker holy grail?” People have differing interpretations of a “grail”, but the thing most can agree on is that there is a certain level of unattainability about them. It could be the price of the kicks is too expensive, or it is a shoe that hype has forgotten or it is simply too rare to get through conventional methods, but grails are kicks that you feel is a gaping hole in your collection that you can’t have right now.
One of my sneaker grails – if not THE GRAIL – is the adidas Team Zissou from the movie The Life Aquatic. No, this is not some hipster choice that grew up out of deranged fanboy love for all things Wes Anderson (the only other Anderson movie I’ve ever seen is Rushmore). The Life Aquatic came along during my college years and to say that it was a wacky period in my life would be an understatement. College is when you begin to see the world through a different lens and the quirks that maybe you were unable to express so much in high school (like being totally sardonic at all times) are a little more out in the open. The movie’s characters had an aura of self-awareness about them that even in the most dangerous of situations, there was still fun in the interplay between the characters. And if there is anything our Jazzy has learned about me, it’s that I have tendency to say the most inappropriate (in a biting and sarcastic way) things at the worst possible times. That and the movie was all about the pretty colors, which at the time looked awesome on my Xbox with component cables hooked up to a CRT.
So anyways, as Zissou – played by Bill Murray (sneakerheads know him as that other guy on the Tune Squad in Space Jam) – was gearing up for their latest expedition/documentary (see they’re going to kill a Jaguar Shark because… eh, just watch the movie; it’s probably streaming somewhere), there is a short scene where he receives their latest Team Zissou gear. One of the items was an exclusive colorway of the adidas Rom with Zissou branding. Even though I wasn’t paying plenty of attention to the sneaker world during that time, I knew this was a pair that I had to have. That is, if there were any pairs available to the public…
In 2014, sneaker blogs would have been losing their mind over these and adidas Originals would have put together at the very least a limited release of these to satiate the demand. But in 2005, all fans got was an email from the three stripes basically saying “nah.” There are customs being sold all over the internet, but to own a pair either that was on set during filming or a sample that was made by adidas or an actual release is what I and anybody that still cares wants. Realistically, the chances of me owning them of these one-offs are about as likely as the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the NBA Draft 3 out of the past 4 years. Hey, wait a minute…
So was this lowkey attempt to convince adidas Originals to bring these out on the tenth anniversary of the film’s debut back in December 2004? Possibly, but much like when Zissou finally (redacted) the Jaguar Shark, who knows what my reaction would be if it actually does happen…
